At the beginning of the month, I was finally able to launch the site for a new project. Getting Queer is a collaborative project with people who currently identify or have identified as queer that aims to shed light on “queer” through photographs, recorded interviews, writing, and other media.

For now, the website will be used primarily to give updates and information about the project. The interviews and photographs will be revealed later down the road, at which point the site will also serve as a place for dialogue.

No matter where you’re from, if you’re interested in being interviewed for Getting Queer, you should get in touch and fill out the form on the “Participate” page. Even if we can’t get together in the near future, by filling out the form, I’ll have your info on file so I can let you know when I’ll be in your area.

Find out more and take a look around at gettingqueer.com.

This is sort of old news, but in case you haven’t heard yet, the Kickstarter campaign for camera on a string was a success! The funding goal was not only reached, but surpassed! That means that cameraonastring.com will be updated every week for a year. Big thanks to everyone who helped out!

Yesterday, I got a call from local reporter Mitch Pittman. He wanted to do a piece about Kickstarter that included camera on a string as an example of a successful campaign. The segment aired on FOX44′s 10 o’clock news. Check it out below!

“camera on a string” is just what it sounds like. It is a disposable camera tied to something – like a bench or a fence or a telephone pole – with a paper inviting people to take a picture. The cameras are (hopefully) collected at the end of the day and all of the magic they contain are shared with the world on cameraonastring.com.

They show that people like to take pictures of themselves, their friends, and innocent passers-by. They take pictures of the people and animals they love. The cameras reveal that people like to dance and smile. They like to be silly and be naughty. And people like when something unexpected pops up in their daily life.

This is installation, intervention, social experiment, exploration of places and the people who occupy them, and all fun!

I’ve just started a Kickstarter campaign to put more cameras on strings out in the world. Specifically, enough that the site can be updated with at least one new camera each week for a year.

Here’s how this works:

You make a pledge of at least $1.

You let everyone you know that they should make a pledge too, because you are just that awesome.

If we meet our $1,000 goal in pledges by 1:05am on October 20th, 2010, then the project is funded and we add at least one new camera to the site each week for a year! Plus, you get fun rewards like undying gratitude, photos, and handwritten notes!

If we don’t meet the goal… then nothing happens. You don’t pay anything, you don’t get anything, we don’t get to add new cameras every week, and the world is a little sadder.

What happens if you help us pass the funding goal? More funding means more cameras in more places!

So about those rewards. Maybe you’ve noticed that only 10 of the 27 photos are posted from each camera. ALL backers get special access to some of the photos that aren’t on the website. Give $15 or more and you get a print of one of the photos from camera on a string. The more you give, the more options you have for the photos you receive!

And if you’re REALLY feeling generous, not only do you get a photo package, you also get to name a city of your choice where a camera on a string will be located!

Click on the Kickstarter box to see the video, get the full details, and make your pledge! Thanks for being awesome and supporting camera on a string!

A friend of mine started this project a year ago. Last month, I gave its site a complete and total make-over. Aside from sharing something else that I’ve been up to, it’d be awesome to see more people participate in this.
