“camera on a string” is just what it sounds like. It is a disposable camera tied to something – like a bench or a fence or a telephone pole – with a paper inviting people to take a picture. The cameras are (hopefully) collected at the end of the day and all of the magic they contain are shared with the world on cameraonastring.com.
They show that people like to take pictures of themselves, their friends, and innocent passers-by. They take pictures of the people and animals they love. The cameras reveal that people like to dance and smile. They like to be silly and be naughty. And people like when something unexpected pops up in their daily life.
This is installation, intervention, social experiment, exploration of places and the people who occupy them, and all fun!
I’ve just started a Kickstarter campaign to put more cameras on strings out in the world. Specifically, enough that the site can be updated with at least one new camera each week for a year.
Here’s how this works:
- You make a pledge of at least $1.
- You let everyone you know that they should make a pledge too, because you are just that awesome.
- If we meet our $1,000 goal in pledges by 1:05am on October 20th, 2010, then the project is funded and we add at least one new camera to the site each week for a year! Plus, you get fun rewards like undying gratitude, photos, and handwritten notes!
- If we don’t meet the goal… then nothing happens. You don’t pay anything, you don’t get anything, we don’t get to add new cameras every week, and the world is a little sadder.
What happens if you help us pass the funding goal? More funding means more cameras in more places!
So about those rewards. Maybe you’ve noticed that only 10 of the 27 photos are posted from each camera. ALL backers get special access to some of the photos that aren’t on the website. Give $15 or more and you get a print of one of the photos from camera on a string. The more you give, the more options you have for the photos you receive!
And if you’re REALLY feeling generous, not only do you get a photo package, you also get to name a city of your choice where a camera on a string will be located!
Click on the Kickstarter box to see the video, get the full details, and make your pledge! Thanks for being awesome and supporting camera on a string!
